The Peace Table — A Ritual Space

The peace table is a sacred classroom space. Children go to it to resolve conflict, to calm themselves, or to write a reflection. The ritual — sit, breathe, speak or write — is the control. No rules are imposed; the space itself carries the practice.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Set up the peace table in a quiet corner. 2. Place meaningful objects on it. 3. Introduce it to the class as a sacred space. 4. Explain: 'Any of us can come here alone to calm down, or with someone to resolve a problem.' 5. Demonstrate: sit at the table, breathe deeply, strike the chime. 6. If with a partner: each speaks in turn (peace rose style). 7. When agreed, write a short entry in the peace journal. 8. Return to work. 9. Over weeks, the practice becomes natural.

Educator tip

Resist the urge to manage what happens at the peace table. Some of the most important learning is invisible. Trust the ritual.

Assessment

Observe voluntary use, respectful behavior at the table, and quality of journal entries.
