Electricity — Building a Simple Circuit

Electricity becomes real when the bulb lights. A broken circuit stays dark — the completeness is the control. The child learns that current needs a closed path, then explores what allows that path.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Connect the battery to the bulb directly with two wires. 2. The bulb lights. 3. Break one wire — bulb goes out. Why? 4. Discuss: electricity needs a complete loop. 5. Add a switch; flip to turn the bulb on/off. 6. Substitute different materials for a wire: copper (bright), aluminum foil (bright), plastic (no light). 7. Classify: conductors (metals, salty water) vs insulators. 8. Draw circuit diagrams. 9. Research electricity in the home.

Educator tip

Use LED bulbs — they're safer and more forgiving. Adult supervises any setup near water.

Assessment

Note correct circuit assembly, identification of conductors vs insulators, and circuit diagram accuracy.
