Principles of Design — Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern, Rhythm, Unity

If the elements of art are the letters, the principles are the grammar. How is this painting balanced? Where's the emphasis? What creates unity? Artworks that fail these principles feel wrong — unbalanced, chaotic, dull. The work itself is the control.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Introduce the six principles: balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern, rhythm, unity. 2. Show examples in a master painting. 3. Use nomenclature cards for each principle. 4. Critique a second artwork: 'Where is the emphasis? What creates unity?' 5. Create a collage with one principle (e.g., radial balance). 6. Create a second collage emphasizing contrast. 7. Discuss each with classmates. 8. Hunt for principles in classroom art, books, architecture. 9. Apply in a final personal piece.

Educator tip

Principles are vocabulary for feeling. The child who can say 'this feels unbalanced' is thinking like an artist. Use the language daily.

Assessment

Note identification in art, application in original work, and critique fluency.
