Fifth Great Lesson: The Story of Numbers
The Fifth Great Lesson completes the cosmic story with the invention that allowed science, commerce, and engineering. Zero came late but changed everything. The place-value system the child uses daily was a gift from India.
- Framework: Montessori

Materials
- Charts showing numeral systems across cultures
- Counting board with pebbles
- Abacus (Chinese or Russian)
- Timeline of mathematical invention
Instructions
1. Gather the children. 2. Tell the story of early counting: notches on bones, pebbles in pouches. 3. Show Babylonian numerals (base 60 — why we have 60 minutes). 4. Show Egyptian numerals. 5. Show Roman numerals (and their difficulty for multiplication). 6. Tell of zero's invention in India. 7. Show Hindu-Arabic numerals spreading via trade routes. 8. Demonstrate the power of place value with a hard multiplication. 9. Invite research: Roman numerals, Mayan numerals, modern mathematical notation.
