Instructions
Materials
- A large unbreakable mirror mounted at child height.
- A upbeat song about body parts, such as Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.
- Small handheld mirrors for individual exploration.
- A soft puppet or doll with clearly defined facial features.
- Cardstock cutouts of eyes, noses, and mouths.
- Glue sticks and construction paper.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and name the head as a distinct part of the body.
- Demonstrate spatial awareness by touching the head upon verbal cue.
- Coordinate physical movement with the rhythm of a song.
- Develop fine motor skills by placing facial features on a paper template.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the puppet to model the location of the head.
2. Ask the children to point to their own heads while you point to yours.
3. Play the music track and encourage the children to stand and move freely.
4. Pause the music at specific intervals and call out, Touch your head, to practice listening and physical response.
5. Transition to the mirror area and allow each child to look at their reflection while naming their head.
6. Distribute the small handheld mirrors to allow children to inspect their features more closely.
7. Move to the tables and provide each child with a blank head outline on construction paper.
8. Assist children in gluing the cutouts of eyes, noses, and mouths onto their paper heads.
9. Encourage children to describe what they see in the mirror as they complete their craft.
10. Conclude by singing the song one final time while holding their completed paper heads.
Educator Tip
If children struggle with the concept of a head, focus on the sensory experience by gently touching their hair or forehead while naming the part. For more advanced learners, challenge them to identify and name additional features like ears or eyebrows during the mirror exploration phase.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly touches their head when prompted by the teacher or the song.
- Note the ability of the child to follow multi-step instructions during the craft portion.
- Record whether the child can identify their own reflection in the mirror.
Educator tip
Use slow repetition and clear gestures to support language learners and visual learners.
Assessment
Note students' participation and accurate identification of body parts during the rhyme.
