- Demonstrate fine motor control by applying glue and attaching collage materials.
- Express personal identity through the selection of colors and clothing features.
- Describe physical characteristics using descriptive vocabulary during group sharing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and place a mirror in the center to encourage them to observe their own features.
2. Facilitate a brief discussion asking students to point to their hair, eyes, and clothes while looking in the mirror.
3. Distribute the pre-cut cardboard outlines to each student.
4. Model the process by drawing a face on a sample cutout, emphasizing the placement of eyes and a smile.
5. Provide markers and crayons for students to color the skin, hair, and facial features on their dolls.
6. Encourage students to use fabric scraps and construction paper to design outfits for their dolls.
7. Assist students in using glue to attach yarn for hair or buttons for eyes to add texture.
8. Allow time for the dolls to dry on a flat surface before displaying them in the classroom.
9. Invite each student to present their doll to the group, pointing out one feature that makes their doll unique.
Educator Tip
To support younger learners, provide pre-cut facial features like paper eyes and mouths to reduce frustration with drawing. For older students, encourage them to add specific details such as glasses, freckles, or jewelry to represent their actual appearance more accurately.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly places facial features in the appropriate areas of the cutout.
- Note the child's ability to use tools like glue sticks and scissors with increasing independence.
- Listen for the child's use of descriptive language when explaining their creative choices during the presentation.
Educator tip
Encourage children to explain their material choices to strengthen self-expression.
Assessment
Check for material use and ability to explain personal choices during doll construction.
