- Tape or adhesive putty for wall mounting.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the month of their own birthday.
- Demonstrate rhythmic movement to a steady beat.
- Practice social turn-taking during group performance.
- Categorize personal information into a larger group structure.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange the twelve month circles in a circle on the floor or along the wall at eye level.
2. Gather the children and ask them if they know which month they were born in.
3. Invite each child to place their photo under the correct month label.
4. Lead a brief discussion about how birthdays are special days that happen once a year.
5. Teach the children a simple chant or song that lists the months in order.
6. Play a steady beat on a drum and have children march in a circle around the month labels.
7. Stop the music periodically and ask children to stand near their own birthday month.
8. Encourage children to identify which month has the most or least photos.
9. Allow children to practice saying the name of their birth month clearly to a partner.
10. Conclude the activity by singing a collective birthday song to celebrate the entire group.
Educator Tip
If a child does not know their birthday, keep a reference list nearby to provide immediate support. To extend this activity for older children, ask them to count how many peers share a birthday month and compare the totals using simple addition or subtraction.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can locate their photo under the correct month label independently.
- Note the ability of the child to maintain a steady beat during the movement portion.
- Record whether the child can verbally state their birth month when prompted.
Educator tip
Reinforce month names daily using a classroom calendar.
Assessment
Observe students' participation, understanding of their birth month, and engagement during singing.
