Materials
- Bingo cards featuring images of body parts or facial features.
- Small bowls of dry cereal or round crackers.
- Laminated card covers or clear contact paper.
- A teacher calling card set with corresponding images.
- Small trays to keep materials organized.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and name specific body parts or personal features.
- Demonstrate improved fine motor control by placing small objects within defined spaces.
- Practice active listening skills by responding to verbal cues.
- Develop social skills through turn-taking and group participation.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange children in a small circle to ensure everyone can see the calling cards.
2. Distribute one bingo card and a small bowl of cereal to each child.
3. Model the activity by holding up a calling card, naming the body part, and pointing to that part on your own body.
4. Ask the children to find the matching image on their bingo card.
5. Demonstrate how to carefully place one piece of cereal on the correct square.
6. Encourage children to repeat the name of the body part aloud as they place their marker.
7. Assist children in Level 1 by guiding their hand to the correct square if they struggle with placement.
8. Challenge Level 3 children by asking them to describe the function of the body part before placing their marker.
9. Continue the game until each child has achieved a line or a full card.
10. Allow children to eat their cereal markers once the game concludes to provide a positive sensory reward.
Educator Tip
If a child becomes frustrated with the small cereal pieces, offer larger manipulatives like plastic counters to support fine motor development. You can extend this activity by asking children to draw a self-portrait on the back of their bingo card to reinforce their understanding of personal identity.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly matches the spoken word to the visual image on the card.
- Record the level of assistance required for the child to place the cereal within the square.
- Note the child's ability to identify the body part on their own body when prompted.
Educator tip
Reinforce letter sounds when calling out letters to build phonemic awareness.
Assessment
Observe students' recognition of letters and ability to follow directions in a group setting.
