Pressure Cylinders: Touch Sensitivity
Pressure cylinders refine one of the most subtle tactile discriminations—the ability to perceive different levels of resistance through fingertip pressure.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Tactile Discrimination
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Refine pressure sensitivity in fingertips
- Discriminate levels of resistance
- Develop concentration through subtle sensation
- Build descriptive language
Materials
- Pairs of cylinders with spring-loaded plungers offering varying resistance
- Blindfold
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present two cylinders of very different resistance. 2. Press plunger on each with index finger. 3. Compare: 'This one is harder to press.' 4. Match pairs by resistance level. 5. Grade from least to most resistance. 6. Blindfold: repeat matching and grading.
Educator tip
Use consistent, gentle pressure from the index finger only. This is very subtle work requiring great concentration.
Assessment
Child matches and grades pressure cylinders accurately while blindfolded.
