Introduction to Topology
Topology is 'rubber geometry' — shapes that can stretch but not tear. A donut and a coffee cup are the same topologically (one hole each). Indirect aim: modern mathematics, preparation for advanced geometry, big-picture thinking.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Form
- Level: Ages 10-12
Objectives
- Understand topological equivalence (donut = coffee cup)
- Explore Möbius strip properties
- Classify surfaces by Euler characteristic
- Grasp that geometry is one kind of structure
Materials
- Paper strips, tape, scissors
- Coffee cup and donut models
- Topology illustrations
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Take paper strip; glue ends to make loop — two sides, two edges. 2. Take another strip; give half-twist before gluing — Möbius strip! One side, one edge. 3. Cut Möbius down the middle — surprise! 4. Cut 1/3 from edge — double surprise. 5. Donut and coffee cup: both have one hole. 6. Sphere: zero holes. 7. Euler characteristic V-E+F: sphere=2, donut=0. 8. Research topology in DNA, knot theory.
Educator tip
Möbius strip delights mathematicians of any age. Cut it and watch children's faces.
Assessment
Observe Möbius construction, cutting surprise, and big-picture grasp.
