Brown Stair (Broad Stair)
The Brown Stair isolates two dimensions (width and height) while length remains constant. This helps children perceive thickness distinctly from length.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Discriminate between two-dimensional size (width/height)
- Develop perception of thick/thin
- Build muscular perception of weight
- Prepare for measurement concepts
Materials
- Brown Stair: 10 brown wooden prisms
- Prisms graduated in two dimensions while length stays constant (20cm)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Carry prisms one at a time with two hands. 2. Place randomly on mat. 3. Select thickest prism, place at left. 4. Find next thickest, place beside it, flush at one end. 5. Continue to thinnest prism. 6. Run fingers along stair edge to feel graduation. 7. Dismantle and return.
Educator tip
The weight increases dramatically with thickness—children naturally sense this difference while carrying.
Assessment
Child arranges prisms correctly from thickest to thinnest with ends aligned.
