Red Rods
The Red Rods isolate length as the only variable—all rods have the same width and height. This clear isolation helps children perceive length differences precisely.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Discriminate length in one dimension
- Develop perception of long/short
- Prepare for measurement and mathematics
- Build vocabulary for comparative size
Materials
- Red Rods: 10 red wooden rods
- Rods graduated from 10cm to 100cm in 10cm increments
- Large floor mat
Instructions
1. Carry rods horizontally with two hands. 2. Place randomly on mat. 3. Select longest rod, place at top. 4. Find next longest, place below, aligned at left. 5. Continue to shortest rod. 6. Touch ends to feel stair pattern. 7. Dismantle and return carefully.
Educator tip
These rods are identical to the Number Rods used in mathematics, without the alternating color. This is direct preparation for understanding length in math.
Assessment
Child arranges rods from longest to shortest with left ends aligned, creating visible stair pattern.
