Brown Stair: Thick and Thin Grading
The brown stair isolates the dimension of thickness while keeping length constant, training the eye to perceive a single variable.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Discriminate differences in thickness
- Grade from thickest to thinnest
- Develop vocabulary for dimension
- Build visual acuity for one dimension
Materials
- Brown stair: 10 prisms varying in thickness (1cm to 10cm square, all same length)
- Work mat
- Extension activities: cards, blindfold
Instructions
1. Carry prisms one at a time to mat. 2. Scatter randomly. 3. Find the thickest prism. 4. Find the next thickest. 5. Place beside first, edges aligned. 6. Continue grading to thinnest. 7. Run hand along stair to feel progression. 8. Check: is the pattern smooth?
Educator tip
Carry prisms with two hands, one at a time—this builds appreciation for their weight differences. The 'running hand' check is the key self-correction.
Assessment
Child grades all 10 prisms from thickest to thinnest without error.
