Household Budgeting — A Real Expense Tracker
Elementary children are ready to grasp money as a system. A real or simulated budget shows that every expense has a source, and that saving creates future options. Discrepancies between income and expenses are the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Track a simple classroom or family budget over a week
- Categorize expenses (food, supplies, outings)
- Compare income to expenses
- Understand the concept of saving
Materials
- Small ledger or notebook
- Real receipts or sample receipts
- Pencil, calculator
- Coin collection for hands-on counting (optional)
Instructions
1. Agree on a 'household' — a family, a classroom, or a virtual one. 2. List expected income for the week. 3. List expected categories: food, supplies, outings, saving. 4. Allocate a proportion to each category. 5. Track each real or simulated purchase in the ledger. 6. At week's end, total each category. 7. Compare to the plan: over, under, or on target? 8. Discuss surprises. 9. Adjust the plan for next week.
Educator tip
Use real small amounts of money where possible. Connect to the classroom snack or supply budget so the stakes are real.
Assessment
Note accuracy of tracking, categorization, and reflection at week's end.
