Transferring with Tongs
Tongs isolate the pincer grip as a tool action. The child squeezes to grip, releases to drop — the same motion later refined into pencil control. A fallen object on the tray is the visible self-correction; no adult reminder needed.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Preliminary Exercises
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Transfer small objects using tongs with precision
- Strengthen the pincer grip through sustained gripping
- Refine hand-eye coordination
- Prepare for writing implement grip
Materials
- Small tray
- Two identical bowls
- Kitchen tongs sized for child's hand
- Ten small pom-poms, cotton balls, or walnuts in shells
Instructions
1. Carry the tray to a table with two hands. 2. Sit on the child's dominant side. 3. Grasp the tongs with thumb and first two fingers. 4. Squeeze to open, release to close around an object. 5. Lift one pom-pom from the left bowl. 6. Carry steadily across the midline. 7. Release it into the right bowl. 8. Continue until the left bowl is empty. 9. Reverse direction; restore the tray to its shelf position.
Educator tip
Choose objects slightly larger than a marble — small enough to require control, large enough to grip without frustration. Walnut shells are durable and satisfying to click.
Assessment
Note grip formation, midline crossing, and whether the child retrieves fallen objects without prompting.
