Transferring Liquid with an Eye Dropper
The eye dropper gives the child tool-based precision with liquid. The squeeze-release rhythm refines the same pincer action that will later hold a pencil. Drops on the tray are visible; the sponge completes the cycle.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Preliminary Exercises
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Squeeze the bulb of an eye dropper to draw and release liquid
- Transfer colored water drop by drop between small containers
- Develop the three-finger pincer action
- Prepare for precision tool use
Materials
- Small tray with raised edges
- Eye dropper (glass preferred)
- Two small vessels — one with tinted water, one empty
- Small sponge for drips
Instructions
1. Carry the tray to a table. 2. Pick up the dropper with a three-finger grip on the bulb. 3. Squeeze the bulb and dip the tip into the colored water. 4. Release the bulb slowly — water rises. 5. Lift and carry to the empty vessel. 6. Squeeze gently to release drops one by one. 7. Continue until the first vessel is empty. 8. Use the sponge to absorb any stray drops. 9. Reverse direction if desired; restore the tray.
Educator tip
Tint the water with one drop of food coloring so drops are clearly visible in both the dropper and the receiving vessel. The visibility is the captivating detail.
Assessment
Note pincer grip control, deliberate squeeze-release rhythm, and spontaneous use of the sponge.
