Care of a Classroom Pet
A living creature that depends on the children teaches responsibility more deeply than any words. A neglected pet shows signs — sluggish, thin, unclean habitat. These signs are the control, and the child's care is the remedy.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Feed, water, and clean the habitat of a classroom pet
- Observe and record the pet's health
- Take shared responsibility with classmates
- Develop empathy for a dependent creature
Materials
- Classroom pet (fish, hamster, guinea pig, chinchilla, turtle)
- Appropriate food and dish
- Water container
- Cleaning supplies for the habitat

Instructions
1. Wash hands before approaching the pet. 2. Check the water supply and replenish if low. 3. Measure out the correct amount of food. 4. Feed the pet gently — avoid startling. 5. Observe the pet: is it eating? moving normally? clean coat/scales? 6. Note observations in the journal. 7. Once a week, clean the habitat under adult supervision. 8. Wash hands after contact. 9. Report any concerns to the adult.
Educator tip
Rotate pet care among children so all share responsibility. Post a simple checklist near the habitat so duties are never forgotten.
Assessment
Note consistency of care, attention to pet's condition, and quality of observation journal.
