Word Problems with Materials
Word problems require translating language into mathematics. The material makes the operation concrete: 'If 4 children share 24 apples equally, how many each?' becomes 24 golden beads distributed among 4 bowls. The final count is the answer; the problem is checked by rereading.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Word Problems
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Translate a word problem into a mathematical expression
- Use Montessori materials (stamp game, bead bars) to compute
- Check the answer against the problem's conditions
- Develop problem-solving confidence
Materials
- Collection of word problems printed on cards, graded by difficulty
- Stamp game
- Bead bars
- Paper and pencil
Instructions
1. Read a word problem aloud. 2. Identify the question. 3. Identify the numbers and operation (divide, multiply, add, subtract). 4. Set up the materials to model the problem. 5. Carry out the operation with the materials. 6. Count the result. 7. Write the answer as a complete sentence. 8. Reread the problem to verify the answer makes sense. 9. Progress to multi-step problems.
Educator tip
Let children write their own word problems based on classroom events (buying snacks, distributing materials). Problems with personal stakes engage more deeply.
Assessment
Note accurate translation, correct operation choice, and self-verification.
