Short Chains — Squaring Visualized
The short chain for 5 is five 5-bead bars joined — 25 beads total. Laid beside the 5×5 square tile, the chain and the square are equivalent. Skip counting along the chain (5, 10, 15, 20, 25) lands on 25. The material is the control — chain and tile must agree.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Squaring and Cubing
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Lay out the short chain for each number 2–10
- Skip count along the chain to discover the square
- Verify that n × n = n² = the square tile
- Connect chain to square bead tile
Materials
- Short chains (2² through 10²)
- Square bead tiles matching each chain
- Number arrows for multiples
- Long carpet or hallway for extension
Instructions
1. Take the 5-chain short to a long rug. 2. Lay the chain out flat. 3. Count its bead bars: 5. 4. Skip count along the chain by 5s, placing a number arrow at each multiple: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. 5. Bring the 5-square tile. 6. Lay it beside or over the chain — it matches exactly. 7. Record 5 × 5 = 25 = 5². 8. Repeat for other chains. 9. Notice pattern: each successive chain is longer.
Educator tip
The 10-chain short is very long — give it space. Let the child walk its length while counting aloud.
Assessment
Note skip-count accuracy, arrow placement, and whether the child connects chain to square tile.
