Subtraction Snake Game
The subtraction snake adds gray bars representing subtraction. As the count approaches a gray bar, beads are removed — subtraction is visible as physical removal. A miscount leaves too many or too few beads in the final remainder.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Subtraction
- Level: Ages 5-7
Objectives
- Transform a snake containing gray (negative) bars into a reduced sum
- Understand subtraction as removal from a total
- Memorize subtraction facts sensorially
- Prepare for signed number arithmetic
Materials
- Snake Game set plus gray bead bars (negative values)
- Colored bead bars, golden ten-bars, felt mat
Instructions
1. Lay a snake: 5, 3 (gray = subtract 3), 7, 2 (gray = subtract 2), 4. 2. Count from the head. 3. When reaching a gray bar, remove the appropriate number of beads from previously-counted bars. 4. Replace tens with golden ten-bars as they accumulate. 5. Continue to the end. 6. The final snake shows the net sum. 7. Verify: 5 - 3 + 7 - 2 + 4 = 11. 8. Check: one ten-bar + one-bar. 9. Reflect on how subtraction fits into the 10-bar accumulation.
Educator tip
Gray bars can feel abstract at first. Let children place the gray bars visibly separate, then physically remove beads when encountered.
Assessment
Note accurate removal, proper grouping, and final sum correctness.
