Multiplication Snake Game
A snake of six 4-bars is 4 × 6 = 24. The snake is laid, counted, transformed. The child sees that multiplication is just addition of identical groups — a profound and obvious insight.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Multiplication
- Level: Ages 6-7
Objectives
- Understand multiplication as repeated addition via the snake
- Transform a snake of identical bars into the product
- Memorize multiplication facts through sensorial work
- Bridge to abstract multiplication
Materials
- Snake Game set
- Bead bar box
- Multiplication chart for reference
Instructions
1. Lay a snake of six 4-bars: 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4. 2. Name the problem: 4 × 6. 3. Count from the head, replacing at each 10. 4. Count reveals the total: 24. 5. Record 4 × 6 = 24. 6. Now try 3 × 7: seven 3-bars. Count: 21. 7. Compare to 7 × 3: three 7-bars. Also 21 (commutative). 8. Build the multiplication table through snake games. 9. Check against the multiplication chart.
Educator tip
Running through many snakes builds quick recall. Let children race the clock after understanding is secure.
Assessment
Note systematic counting, recognition of commutativity, and growing memory.
