Multiplication as Arrays
Arrays provide a visual model for multiplication that connects to area measurement and clearly demonstrates the commutative property.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Visualize multiplication as rectangular arrays
- Connect to area
- Build commutative understanding
Materials
- Unit tiles or counters
- Grid paper
- Recording sheet
- Array cards
Instructions
1. Build 3 × 4: 3 rows of 4 tiles. 2. Count: 12 tiles total. 3. 'Rotate the array: now it's 4 × 3. Still 12!' 4. Draw array on grid paper. 5. Record: 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12. 6. Build arrays for various facts. 7. 'How is this like measuring area?'
Educator tip
Arrays beautifully connect multiplication, area, and commutativity in one visual model.
Assessment
Child builds arrays, counts products, and identifies commutative property.
