Mental Math — Shortcuts and Tricks
Mental math builds confidence and speed. The brain is the control — verify with calculator. Indirect aim: number fluency, preparation for estimation in daily life.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Multiply by 9 using fingers
- Square numbers ending in 5 instantly
- Add long columns quickly by grouping
- Estimate large computations
Materials
- Mental math chart
- Problem flashcards
- Timer
Instructions
1. Times 9 finger trick: fold n-th finger; left fingers = tens, right = ones. 9×7: fold 7th; 6 left, 3 right = 63. 2. Squaring numbers ending in 5: n5² = n(n+1) with 25 appended. 35² = 3×4=12, append 25 = 1225. 3. Add long column by pairs summing to 10. 4. Multiply by 11: abc × 11 = a(a+b)(b+c)c for most 3-digit. 5. Estimate 47×52 ≈ 50×50 = 2500. 6. Verify with calculator. 7. Practice daily. 8. File.
