Geometric Proofs — Simple Theorems
Euclidean proof is mathematics' oldest discipline. Two lines cross: the vertical angles are equal. Why? Because both supplement the same angle. Indirect aim: logical reasoning, preparation for advanced geometry, formal mathematical thinking.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Prove simple geometric statements (vertical angles are equal)
- Use two-column proof format
- Apply congruence postulates (SSS, SAS, ASA)
- Build logical reasoning
Materials
- Compass and straightedge
- Proof template
- Theorem reference
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Statement: Vertical angles are congruent. 2. Draw two intersecting lines, labeling angles 1, 2, 3, 4. 3. Know: angles 1+2 = 180° (linear pair). Angles 2+3 = 180°. So angle 1 = angle 3. QED. 4. Write as two columns: Statements | Reasons. 5. Prove: SSS congruence — if three sides equal, triangles congruent. 6. Practice: draw, measure, prove. 7. Build to angle bisector theorem. 8. File proofs.
Educator tip
Proof is hard; go slowly. Start with one-step, build.
Assessment
Observe logical progression, reason citation, and ability to follow a proof.
