Spindle Boxes
The Spindle Boxes introduce zero and reinforce that numbers can represent loose objects, not just fixed quantities like the Number Rods. This is preparation for abstract counting.

- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Counting & Quantity
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Develop one-to-one correspondence
- Understand zero as the empty set

Materials
- Spindle Boxes: Two boxes with compartments labeled 0-9
- 45 wooden spindles
- Rubber bands or ribbon (optional)
Instructions
1. Point to 0 compartment. 'Zero means nothing.' 2. Move to 1. 'One means this many.' Place one spindle. 3. Continue through 9. 4. Count spindles while placing. 5. Point out empty zero compartment. 6. Verify by removing and recounting.
Educator tip
Bundle spindles with rubber band before placing to emphasize 'groups' of quantity. The empty zero compartment is powerful.
