Exponents — Laws and Applications
Exponents compress multiplication. 2^10 = 1024. Laws govern manipulation: a^m × a^n = a^(m+n). Indirect aim: scientific notation, algebraic manipulation, preparation for logarithms.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Algebra
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Apply exponent laws: product, quotient, power, zero, negative
- Simplify expressions with exponents
- Compute in scientific notation
- Understand exponential growth
Materials
- Exponent rules chart
- Problem slips
- Calculator
- Real data (population, virus)
Instructions
1. Product: a^m × a^n = a^(m+n). 2^3 × 2^4 = 2^7 = 128. 2. Quotient: a^m / a^n = a^(m-n). 2^5 / 2^3 = 2^2 = 4. 3. Power: (a^m)^n = a^(m×n). (2^3)^2 = 2^6 = 64. 4. Zero: a^0 = 1. 5. Negative: a^(-n) = 1/a^n. 2^(-2) = 1/4. 6. Scientific notation: 3×10^4 × 2×10^3 = 6×10^7. 7. Exponential growth: bacteria double: 2^10 = 1024 in 10 generations. 8. File.
Educator tip
Exponents are where algebra becomes powerful. Practice until laws are reflex.
