Measurement: Non-Standard Units
Non-standard measurement introduces the concept of iteration and comparison before the complexity of standard units.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Measurement
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Understand measurement concept
- Compare lengths using non-standard units
- Build vocabulary: longer, shorter, same
- Prepare for standard measurement
Materials
- Objects to measure (desk, book, pencil)
- Non-standard units (paper clips, blocks, hand spans)
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. 'How long is your desk?' 2. Line up paper clips end-to-end along desk edge. 3. Count: 'The desk is 28 paper clips long.' 4. Measure same desk with blocks. 5. Compare: different numbers! Why? 6. Measure multiple objects. 7. Record results. 8. Compare: which is longest?
Educator tip
The key insight is that the same object gives different measurements with different units. This prepares children for why we need standard units.
Assessment
Child measures objects using non-standard units and compares results.
