Pattern Block Designs and Symmetry
Pattern blocks reveal how geometric shapes relate to each other—how triangles combine to form hexagons, how symmetry creates beauty.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 3-6
Objectives
- Explore geometric relationships
- Build symmetrical designs
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Combine shapes to fill space
Materials
- Pattern blocks (hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, triangles, squares)
- Design cards
- Mirror for symmetry
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Free exploration: build anything. 2. Present design card: replicate with blocks. 3. Explore equivalence: 6 triangles = 1 hexagon. 4. Create symmetrical design: place mirror on line of symmetry. 5. Build one half, check with mirror. 6. Complete other half to match. 7. Record designs on paper.
Educator tip
Free exploration should come first. After children know the blocks, structured activities like symmetry and equivalence build deep understanding.
Assessment
Child creates symmetrical designs and demonstrates shape equivalences.
