Geometric Shapes Sorting and Classification
Shape classification builds geometric thinking—moving from recognition to understanding properties that define each shape.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Geometry
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Identify basic geometric shapes
- Classify shapes by properties
- Build geometry vocabulary
- Develop sorting and reasoning skills
Materials
- Shape sorting set (circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals, diamonds)
- Sorting mat with attribute labels
- Shape stamps
- Shape hunt recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present shapes: name each one. 2. Three-period lesson for new shapes. 3. Sort by shape type. 4. Discuss properties: 'How many sides does a triangle have?' 5. Sort by number of sides. 6. Sort by curved vs straight sides. 7. Shape hunt: find shapes in classroom. 8. Record findings on sheet.
Educator tip
Use proper geometric terminology from the start. Vary orientation—triangles that don't sit on a flat base are still triangles.
Assessment
Child identifies, names, and classifies shapes by properties.
