Introduction to Negative Numbers
Montessori children are ready for negative numbers—the concept connects to temperature (below zero), floors below ground, and the number line.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Number Concepts
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand numbers below zero
- Use number line extending left of zero
- Connect to temperature and elevation
Materials
- Number line -10 to 10
- Thermometer
- Elevator diagram
- Counters
Instructions
1. Present number line 0-10. 'What's to the left of zero?' 2. Extend to show -1, -2, -3... 3. Temperature context: 'In winter, it can be -5°C. That's 5 degrees below zero.' 4. Elevator: 'The parking garage is on floor -2.' 5. Walk the number line: '3 steps back from 1 puts you at -2.'
Educator tip
Temperature is the most intuitive context for negative numbers. Use a large thermometer visual.
