Division with Golden Beads: Sharing Equally
Division with golden beads makes equal sharing visible and concrete. Children physically distribute beads into groups, seeing division happen.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand division as equal sharing
- Practice distributing quantities
- Record division equations
- Develop fair-sharing concept
Materials
- Golden bead material
- Sorting trays for divisors (2-3 groups)
- Large number cards
- Small number cards for quotient
- Skittles (for group markers)
Instructions
1. Build dividend with beads (e.g., 6,842). 2. Set out 2 skittles (dividing by 2). 3. Distribute thousands equally: each gets 3 thousand-cubes. 4. Distribute hundreds: each gets 4 hundred-squares. 5. Distribute tens: each gets 2 ten-bars. 6. Distribute units: each gets 1 unit. 7. Each group has 3,421. 8. Record: 6,842 ÷ 2 = 3,421.
Educator tip
Start with no remainders. The physical sharing action is key—children deal beads like cards, one at a time, to each group.
Assessment
Child performs division by sharing golden beads equally and records equations.
