Clock: Telling Time to the Hour and Half Hour
Telling time connects mathematics to daily life. The analog clock's circular nature introduces concepts used in later geometry and measurement.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Measurement
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Read analog clock to the hour
- Read clock to the half hour
- Understand hour and minute hands
- Connect time to daily routine
Materials
- Demonstration clock with moveable hands
- Individual student clocks
- Daily schedule cards with times
- Digital/analog matching cards
Instructions
1. Present clock: identify hour hand (short) and minute hand (long). 2. Set to 1:00. 'Where is the minute hand? At 12. The hour hand points to 1. It is one o'clock.' 3. Practice several o'clock times. 4. Introduce half past: minute hand at 6, hour hand between numbers. 5. Match times to daily activities. 6. Set clocks to match schedule cards.
Educator tip
Start with o'clock only. The hour hand's movement between numbers for half-past is tricky—emphasize 'the hour hand is between.'
