Phonetic Object Box: Level 1 CVC
Object boxes provide the bridge from encoding (writing) to decoding (reading). Children read a word and prove comprehension by finding the matching object.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Reading
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Read CVC words independently
- Match written words to objects
- Build decoding confidence
- Apply phonetic knowledge to reading
Materials
- Small box with miniature CVC objects (cat, dog, pen, cup, hat)
- Word cards matching each object
- Reading mat
Instructions
1. Place objects on mat. 2. Present word card: 'cat.' 3. 'Can you read this?' 4. Child sounds out: '/k/ /a/ /t/... cat!' 5. Places card next to matching object. 6. Continue with all cards. 7. Self-check: do all cards match?
Educator tip
If a child struggles, have them build the word with the Moveable Alphabet first, then read the card. Encoding often precedes decoding.
Assessment
