Dictation: Sounds to Writing
Dictation bridges independent encoding and conventional spelling by providing guided practice in translating heard sounds to written symbols.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Write words from dictation
- Apply sound-symbol knowledge to encoding
- Develop spelling accuracy
- Build writing fluency under guidance
Materials
- Paper and pencil
- Dictation word lists (CVC, then CCVC, CVCC)
- Picture cards for self-checking
Instructions
1. Say word clearly: 'sun.' 2. Child repeats: 'sun.' 3. Child segments: '/s/ /u/ /n/.' 4. Writes each sound. 5. Check together. 6. Progress from CVC to blends. 7. Eventually dictate short sentences.
Educator tip
Dictation should feel supportive, not like a test. Celebrate what children hear correctly. 'You heard 3 out of 4 sounds!'
