Number Fishing Game

Infants develop motor skills through water play.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- A shallow, wide plastic bin filled with two inches of lukewarm water.

- Five to seven large, foam fish shapes with numbers 1 through 5 written clearly on them.

- A soft, mesh-covered net or a plastic colander with a handle.

- A clean towel for spills.

- A waterproof floor mat.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate visual tracking by following the movement of the foam fish in the water.

- Practise reaching and grasping motions to touch the floating objects.

- Experience sensory input through the texture of the foam and the temperature of the water.

- Hear and respond to number words spoken in a rhythmic, repetitive cadence.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place the waterproof mat on the floor and set the shallow bin in the centre.

2. Fill the bin with a small amount of lukewarm water to ensure safety and comfort.

3. Place the foam fish into the water and allow them to float freely.

4. Position the infant securely in a seated position or on their tummy facing the bin.

5. Sit beside the infant and use your hand to gently splash the water, drawing their attention to the fish.

6. Pick up one fish and hold it near the infant, saying the number aloud clearly.

7. Demonstrate how to scoop the fish using the net, narrating your actions with simple words like scoop, lift, and splash.

8. Encourage the infant to reach for the floating fish, providing physical support if they are learning to sit.

9. Allow the infant to explore the texture of the wet foam with their hands.

10. Keep the session brief, ending the activity when the infant loses interest or becomes restless.

Educator Tip

Infants learn through repetition and sensory engagement rather than formal counting. Focus on the sound of the numbers and the physical sensation of the water. If an infant is hesitant, start by letting them touch the dry foam fish before introducing the water.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant tracks the movement of the fish with their eyes.

- Note whether the infant attempts to reach for or grasp the floating objects.

- Record if the infant shows a positive response, such as smiling or vocalizing, when the teacher speaks the number words.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe reaching and grasping.
