Number Fishing Game

Level 1 builds number word recognition.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Ten paper fish cutouts with numbers 1 through 5 written on them twice.

- Ten large metal paper clips attached to the nose of each fish.

- A wooden dowel with a piece of string and a small magnet tied to the end.

- A shallow blue plastic bin or sensory tray.

- A set of five small baskets or containers labelled with numerals 1 through 5.

Learning Objectives

- Recognise and identify numerals 1 through 5.

- Demonstrate hand-eye coordination by using the magnetic fishing rod.

- Practise one-to-one correspondence by placing fish into the matching numbered basket.

- Engage in turn-taking during a small group activity.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place the paper fish into the blue bin to represent a pond.

2. Set the five numbered baskets in a row near the pond.

3. Gather three to four children around the bin to demonstrate how the magnet catches the paper clip.

4. Model the activity by catching one fish and saying the number aloud.

5. Ask the child to identify the number on the fish they caught.

6. Guide the child to walk the fish over to the basket that matches the numeral on the fish.

7. Encourage the child to count the fish as they place them into the correct container.

8. Allow each child to catch two fish before rotating to the next student.

9. Provide verbal support if a child confuses similar numerals like 2 and 5.

10. Conclude by reviewing the contents of each basket to ensure all fish are sorted correctly.

Educator Tip

If children struggle with the fine motor control of the fishing rod, allow them to use their hands to pick up the fish instead. To extend the activity for more advanced learners, add more fish with higher numbers or ask them to sort by colour in addition to the numeral.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly name the numeral on the fish they catch.

- Note whether the child places the fish into the basket with the matching numeral.

- Record if the child requires physical assistance to operate the fishing rod.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: number recognition, word matching.
