Number Fishing Game

Toddlers build number awareness through play.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large plastic bin or shallow sensory table filled with water.

- Foam fish shapes with numbers 1 through 5 printed clearly on each.

- Small plastic nets or slotted spoons for each child.

- Laminated number cards matching the fish.

- Towels for spills and drying hands.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate hand-eye coordination by scooping objects from water.

- Recognise the concept of one-to-one correspondence through play.

- Respond to simple verbal prompts regarding numbers.

- Engage in sensory exploration of water and textures.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place the sensory bin on a low table or the floor on a waterproof mat.

2. Fill the bin with two inches of lukewarm water.

3. Scatter the foam fish into the water and allow children to touch and splash.

4. Demonstrate how to use the net to catch a fish by scooping it out of the water.

5. Hold up a caught fish and name the number aloud while pointing to the digit.

6. Encourage the child to catch their own fish using the net.

7. Assist the child in placing their caught fish onto the corresponding laminated number card.

8. Use simple language such as catch the fish or one fish to reinforce the activity.

9. Keep the session brief, as toddlers often lose interest after five to ten minutes.

10. Guide children to dry their hands and place the fish back in the bin for the next group.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles with the net, allow them to use their hands to retrieve the fish. This tactile approach builds confidence and keeps the focus on number exposure rather than tool manipulation. You can extend the activity for more advanced toddlers by asking them to find a specific number you name.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can successfully retrieve a fish using the provided tool.

- Note if the child shows interest in matching the fish to the correct number card.

- Record whether the child responds to verbal cues like catch or number.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Participation, counting attempts.
