Number Fishing Game
Level 3 promotes mathematical reasoning.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Summer Time
- Learning area: Mathematics
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Use number words in equations
- create word problems from fishing results.
Instructions
Materials
- Cardstock paper cut into fish shapes
- Permanent markers for writing numbers and number words
- Paper clips attached to the nose of each fish
- Wooden dowels with string and small magnets tied to the end
- A blue plastic bin or shallow water table
- Small baskets for sorting the catch
Learning Objectives
- Identify and read number words from one to ten.
- Match a written number word to its corresponding numeral.
- Practise fine motor control through precise magnetic fishing.
- Demonstrate turn-taking and collaborative play during a group activity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the fish by writing a numeral on one side and the corresponding number word on the other.
2. Place all the fish inside the blue bin to simulate a pond.
3. Gather the children in a circle and explain that they are fishing for specific numbers today.
4. Call out a number word, such as five, and ask a student to identify which fish represents that word.
5. Demonstrate how to use the magnetic rod to hook the fish by the paper clip.
6. Invite the student to catch the fish and read the word aloud to the group.
7. Ask the student to flip the fish over to confirm the numeral matches the word they read.
8. Encourage the child to place the fish into their basket once they successfully identify the word.
9. Rotate turns so every child has the opportunity to fish for a specific number word.
10. Conclude by counting the total number of fish caught in the baskets as a group.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for advanced learners, ask them to catch two fish and add the numbers together. If a student struggles with word recognition, provide a reference chart on the wall that displays the numeral next to the word for visual support.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the number word when spoken by the teacher.
- Note whether the child successfully matches the word to the numeral without assistance.
- Record the child ability to manipulate the fishing rod with hand-eye coordination.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: problem creation, equation accuracy.
