Instructions
Play a single environmental sound (dog barking, door knocking, rain). Watch the baby's response. 'What's that sound? Woof woof! It's a DOG!' Show the dog picture or toy.
Start with highly familiar sounds: parent's voice, doorbell, running water. Babies respond to sounds they recognise from their own environment first.
Play the sound, pause, then reveal the matching object or picture. This brief pause builds anticipation and gives the baby's brain time to process and predict.
For older babies approaching 18 months, play two contrasting sounds and see if they can indicate which picture matches: 'Was that the cat or the duck? Point and show me!'
Create a 'sounds of our nursery' collection: the front door buzzer, the lunch trolley, the garden gate. These hyper-familiar sounds have the strongest recognition response.
This activity directly builds the auditory discrimination skills that underpin later phonics learning — telling sounds apart is the foundation of telling letters apart.
