Lift-the-Flap Discovery

To develop prediction, anticipation, and fine motor skills through lift-the-flap book interaction.

Choose lift-the-flap books with sturdy flaps designed for small hands: 'Dear Zoo', 'Where's Spot?', 'Peek-a-Boo!'. The flap mechanism adds physical interaction to reading.

Build anticipation before each flap: 'Who's hiding behind this door? Shall we see? One... two... three... OPEN!' The pause before lifting creates a moment of prediction — 'what might it be?'

Let the baby lift the flap themselves whenever possible. Guide their hand initially: 'Here — put your finger here. Now LIFT! Oh! It's a lion! ROAR!' The physical action creates agency in the reading experience.

Return to favourites repeatedly. Babies love knowing what's behind the flap AND they love pretending they don't know. This 'intentional surprise' is sophisticated play.

When flaps inevitably tear, repair them with tape rather than removing the book. Damaged books are evidence of enthusiastic literacy!

Create homemade lift-the-flap books using card and photos of familiar people or objects. 'Who's behind the flap? It's DADDY! Hello Daddy!'
