Instructions
Create a beautiful name card for each child with a photo. Display at child height. 'This is YOUR name! It says Amira. A-M-I-R-A. That's you!'
Introduce self-registration: children find their name card and post it in the 'here today' box each morning. This daily name recognition practice is powerful and purposeful.
Offer multi-sensory name writing: fingers in sand, paint brushes in water on the playground, magnetic letters on the fridge. The same word in many contexts builds flexible recognition.
Model writing the child's name while they watch: 'A — that's the first letter. Now M — look, it goes up, down, up, down. I — just one straight line!' Name the process without expecting the child to copy yet.
Celebrate ALL mark-making that a child identifies as their name. A two-year-old who points to a scribble and says 'That says Amira' is demonstrating understanding that marks carry meaning.
Compare names: 'Your name starts with A, and so does Aria's! You share the same first letter!' This comparison introduces phonological awareness naturally.
