Instructions
Set up a post office area with a bright red post box (painted cardboard box), envelopes, stamps (stickers), and writing materials. Add postcards with stamps for quick 'writing'.
Model writing a letter: 'I'm going to write to Teddy. Dear Teddy, I hope you're well. Love, Mrs Jones.' Show the process: writing, folding, putting in envelope, posting in the box.
Invite children: 'Would you like to write a letter to someone? Who would you like to write to? Mummy? Your friend? The Queen?' ANY recipient motivates writing.
Accept ALL marks as writing. A scribble with 'That says Dear Mummy I love you' is a complete literacy achievement — the child understands that marks carry meaning.
Deliver the post! Collect from the post box and distribute letters to their recipients. If letters are to family, put them in book bags. The delivery completes the real-world writing cycle.
Add seasonal prompts: Christmas cards in December, Valentine's cards in February, birthday cards when children have birthdays. Each occasion provides authentic writing motivation.
