Lines of Symmetry

Begin the lesson with a whole-group demonstration using a large half-flower drawn on the whiteboard. Introduce the concept of symmetry by explaining that symmetrical objects look the same on both sides of a line. Trace your finger along the centre line and ask children what they notice about the shape. Demonstrate by slowly drawing the second half of the flower, inviting children to call out suggestions and observations as you draw. Emphasise that each petal, curve, and detail on one side must have a matching counterpart on the other. Distribute individual worksheets featuring a half-flower outline with a clear centre line. Guide children to carefully observe the existing half and draw the mirror image on the opposite side. Encourage them to work slowly and check their work by folding the paper along the centre line. Once drawings are complete, invite children to colour their flowers, reinforcing symmetry by using the same colours on matching petals. Display completed work and facilitate a brief discussion about where children see symmetry in nature.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe each child's grasp of the symmetry concept and their ability to complete the flower by following lines of symmetry.
