Shape Paint

Using shapes in art helps children recognise geometric forms and apply them creatively.

Objectives

• Stamp or paint with shapes to create a community-themed image

Materials

• Sponges or blocks in shapes
• Paint
• Large paper

Instructions

1. Demonstrate stamping shapes to form buildings or vehicles.

2. Let children choose shapes and colours freely.

3. Label shapes as children use them.

Educator tip

Ask 'What shape did you use for the roof?' to prompt vocabulary.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe shape use, fine motor, and creativity.
