I Can DO it!
Celebrating physical accomplishments reinforces persistence, confidence, and the growth mindset that effort leads to achievement.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Champions of Character
- Learning area: Physical Development and Motor Skills
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Complete a simple obstacle course and name a skill they've mastered
Materials
- Cones
- Jump ropes
- Mats
- Tunnels
- Balance beams
Instructions
Transform your movement space into an 'I Can Do It!' challenge course. Set up age-appropriate stations: stepping stones to hop across, a low balance beam to walk, a tunnel to crawl through, and soft mats for safe jumping.
Gather children and build excitement: 'Today we're going to prove how much we can do! Each of you is going to become a Champion of Character by trying your best!' Walk through each station, demonstrating movements and emphasizing that trying is what makes us champions.
Invite children to attempt the course one at a time while classmates cheer from the sidelines. Use encouraging language: 'You're doing it! Look at you balance! Keep going—you've got this!' When a child completes the course, lead the class in celebration.
After all children have participated, gather in a circle and ask each child: 'What are you proud of doing today?' Guide them to recognise their accomplishments: 'I jumped really far!' 'I went through the tunnel!' Validate every response as evidence of their growing capabilities.
Educator tip
Focus on effort over perfection. A child who tries multiple times shows more character than one who succeeds immediately. Celebrate persistence: 'You kept trying even when it was hard—that's what champions do!'
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gross motor skill development, persistence through challenges, and ability to articulate personal accomplishments.
