Story Book Listen
Listening to stories about character traits helps children reflect on emotions and behaviour, providing models for positive social interaction.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Champions of Character
- Learning area: Communication and Language
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Listen to a story about friendship or kindness and discuss its message
Materials
- Character-themed books like 'Have You Filled a Bucket Today?' or 'Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon'
Instructions
Create a cozy reading environment with soft lighting and comfortable seating. Display the book cover and build anticipation: 'This story is about someone who learned an important lesson about being kind. Let's discover what they learned!'
Read with expression and animation, pausing at key moments to check understanding and invite predictions: 'What do you think will happen next? How do you think this character feels?' Use different voices for characters and point to illustrations that reinforce emotional content.
After reading, facilitate a rich discussion: 'What did the character do that was kind? How did it make others feel? Has something like this ever happened to you?' Draw connections between the story and classroom life: 'When have you filled someone's bucket in our classroom?'
Extend the learning by inviting children to share their own kindness stories or to act out a scene from the book. Consider creating a 'Kindness Board' where children can add notes about kind acts they witness or perform.
Educator tip
Connect story traits directly to classroom behaviour: 'Remember when Marcus shared his crayons? That was just like what the character did in our story!' Making these connections helps abstract concepts become concrete.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Evaluate listening comprehension through recall questions, participation quality during discussion, and ability to connect story messages to personal experiences.
