I Can Count My Family
Counting real-life, personally meaningful objects like family members helps solidify early maths concepts while reinforcing family connections.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Champions of Character
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Count and record the number of people in their families
Materials
- Counting cubes
- Photo cards
- Paper
- Number cards 1-10
Instructions
Connect to the previous family activity: 'Remember the family pictures we drew? Today we're going to use maths to learn about our families!' Display number cards 1-10 prominently.
Model the process: 'Let me count my family. I have mum... that's one. Dad... that's two. My sister... that's three. And me! That's four. My family has FOUR people!' Use counting cubes to represent each family member, creating a concrete visual.
Provide each child with counting cubes and paper. Ask: 'How many people live in your house?' Help children place one cube for each family member, then count the cubes together. Record the number on paper—children can write it themselves or trace over your model.
Create a class graph: 'Let's see how many people are in all our families!' Line up cubes from each child to create a visual comparison. Discuss: 'Who has the biggest family? Who has a family the same size as yours?'
Extend with questions: 'What if grandma came to visit? How many would there be then?' This introduces the concept of adding one more.
Educator tip
Be flexible with 'family' definitions—some children may count pets or close friends who feel like family. Honor their perspectives while guiding accurate counting.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe one-to-one correspondence accuracy, number recognition, and ability to compare quantities using language like 'more,' 'less,' and 'same.'
