Celebrating Effort Over Outcome
Shifting focus from outcomes to effort builds growth mindset and reduces performance anxiety.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Champions of Character
- Learning area: Visual and Creative Arts
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Recognise effort as valuable regardless of outcome
- Celebrate process over product
- Encourage peers' effort
Materials
- Effort recognition system
- Process documentation tools
- Celebration supplies
Instructions
Create art where the focus is on the process, not the final product. Document effort throughout: 'Look how many tries you took!' 'See how you kept working when it was hard!' Celebrate effort in all activities, not just success. Create an 'Effort Hall of Fame' recognising persistent effort.
Educator tip
Model celebrating your own effort: 'This didn't turn out how I wanted, but I worked really hard and learned a lot!'
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe self-recognition of effort, celebration of peers' effort, and reduced focus on comparison.
