Active Listening Labs

Active listening—truly hearing and understanding others—is foundational to all positive relationships.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

Teach active listening skills: eye contact, nodding, not interrupting, asking questions, paraphrasing back. Practise with partner activities where one talks and one listens, then the listener paraphrases what they heard. Evaluate listening quality and give feedback. Practise asking follow-up questions that show genuine interest.

Educator tip

Model imperfect listening and good listening so children can see the difference and understand the impact.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe listening behaviours, quality of paraphrasing, and follow-up questions asked.
