Farm Songs & Rhythm
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the Infant stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Creative Arts
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to Infant for Farm Songs & Rhythm.
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- A collection of soft, animal-shaped hand puppets.
- Small wooden maracas or egg shakers.
- A portable music player with a playlist of farm-themed songs.
- A clean, soft floor mat or rug for group seating.
- Large, high-contrast pictures of farm animals.
Learning Objectives
- Infants will track the movement of puppets with their eyes.
- Infants will demonstrate a startle or interest response to rhythmic sounds.
- Infants will reach toward or grasp sensory objects like shakers.
- Infants will show calm or excited engagement through vocalizations or body movement.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange the infants on the floor mat in a semi-circle to ensure they can see your face and the puppets.
2. Play a gentle farm-themed song at a low volume to establish a calm, rhythmic atmosphere.
3. Introduce a puppet, such as a cow or sheep, and move it slowly within the infants' field of vision.
4. Sing a simple song about the animal, using a clear and repetitive melody.
5. Pause the music and shake a maraca gently to draw attention to the sound.
6. Place a shaker into the hand of an infant who is showing interest, assisting them in making a gentle movement.
7. Model the rhythmic shaking by moving your own instrument to the beat of the song.
8. Observe individual reactions and adjust the volume or pace if an infant appears overstimulated.
9. End the activity by slowly putting the puppets away and transitioning to a quiet, soothing lullaby.
Educator Tip
Infants have short attention spans and may become overstimulated by loud noises or too much movement. If an infant looks away or becomes fussy, stop the music and offer a soft puppet for tactile comfort. You can differentiate by using slow, rhythmic movements for younger infants and more active, varied shaking for older infants who are beginning to develop intentional grasp.
Assessment
- Record if the infant turns their head toward the source of the music or the puppet.
- Note if the infant attempts to reach for or hold the shaker during the rhythm portion.
- Document changes in facial expression or vocalizations that indicate engagement with the farm theme.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
